Siue Moffat is a dessert lover like no other who went vegetarian at 14. Her cookbook Lickin' the Beaters is published by PM Press, who will also publish her second cookbook, Lickin' the Beaters 2: Vegan Chocolate and Candy in 2008.

Themed around the duality of dessert--an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other--Siue takes chocolate, candy and even ice creem (vegan alternative to ice cream) head-on with quirky illustrations, useful hints and a handy “Quick Recipe” indicator to make using this book simple and amusing. With an understanding that dessert should be an indulgence, Moffat provides vegan renditions of tantalizing delicacies both traditional and original.

The Library Journal
Moffat (Lickin' the Beaters: Low Fat Vegan Desserts) has found a niche in the ever-growing world of vegan dessert cookbooks. Chocolate lovers will be in heaven as they contemplate Chocolate Zucchini Bread, Brownies, Black Forest Cake, Chocolate Marshmallow Almond Pie, and six types of fudge. Some of the directions could have been clearer, such as when one is supposed to add the oil and soymilk mixture to the Soft Caramel, but that won't stop one from making the delicious Chocolate Tortoises. Moffat provides a bibliography on the social issues behind sugar harvesting as well as a list of fair-trade suppliers of vegan ingredients for the socially conscious cook. VERDICT Readers who enjoyed Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero's Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World and Colleen Patrick-Goudreau's The Joy of Vegan Baking will find much here to satisfy their dairy-free sweet tooth. And there is an entire section devoted to vegan "ice creem." -Mary Schons, Hammond P.L., IN

lickin2Lickin' the Beaters 2
By Mark Robison
Reno Gazette Journal
We loved the first "Lickin' the Beaters" cookbook at our house. Although it focuses mostly on low-fat desserts, it contains one of our go-to recipes for knocking the socks off people that is most decidedly NOT low-fat: a chocolate turtle torte with not one but three sticks of vegan margarine in it.

This new cookbook from Siue Moffat through PM Press and Tofu Hound Press focuses on chocolate and candy. Moffat includes lots of tips for making your desserts turn out better and the whole process easier.

Lickin' the Beaters: Low Fat Vegan Deserts
The Feminist Review
Anita Sonawane

Lickin' The Beaters is a perfect addition to any dessert lover’s collection of recipes. Peanut brittle, rhubarb crunch, date bars, and chocolate chip cookies – these are just some of the offerings in this compact and beautifully illustrated book. Siue Moffat proves that following a vegan diet does not necessitate depriving one’s sweet tooth. The ingredients will seem readily available to any faithful vegan. In fact, most of them are repeated in several recipes, making the book a good investment even for the health conscious non-vegan with an occasional vegan friend.

The desserts are extremely easy to prepare. The average preparation time for the recipes varies from five minutes to a good part of an hour. Lickin' The Beaters does not assume any level of expertise and, thus, remains accessible. Yet Moffat does suggest subtle variations in every recipe, for the more ambitious cook.

With natural ingredients, the desserts are flavorful, but do not cloy the senses. In fact, the book’s only drawback is that it does not present nutrition facts. Moffat does clearly indicate, however, that she does not intend the book for dieters in the “let’s eat as little as possible sense.” This could lead some to lick the beaters a little more cautiously than others. However, lickin’ the beaters they still will be.
